Abstract

Introduction. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is common in critically ill patients and its incidence is increasing, its etiology has changed in the last decades and it appears its a factor associated with increased mortality in patients at the Pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Recent publications about (AKI) at PICU are limited. Materials and methods. This is a descriptive, observational and case control study. Results. The incidence of acute kidney injury in the PICU patients of University Hospital Hernando Moncaleano Perdomo in the period studied was 16,9 %. Sepsis occurred more frequently in patients with AKI compared with the control group (without AKI) (48.6% vs 29.7%, p = 0.05), the OR of Sepsis was 2.23 (95% CI 1.03 - 5.05). The mortality in patients with AKI was higher, with 14 cases (37.8% p <0.01) compared to patients
without AKI with 2 cases (2.7%). The OR for mortality was 21.91 (95% CI 4.63 - 103.1).  Conclusion. This is the first study in the south of Colombia showing the prevalence of AKI in the PICU. The main etiology of AKI was sepsis. Mortality was increased in patients with AKI. Biomarkers should be implemented to achieve early diagnosis of AKI to establish appropriate treatment.
