Afrontamiento y adaptación en padres de niños y/o adolescentes con cáncer en Neiva

Objective
To describe the capacity of coping and adaptation in parents with children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer.
Methodology
A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study, muestreo intencional, intentional sampling with 44 parents linked to the cancerology unit of the Hospital Universitario Hernando Moncaleano Perdomo of Neiva (HUHMP). Two instruments were used to obtain information: sociodemographic data survey and la Escala de medición del proceso de afrontamiento y adaptación (CAPS). Aprobado por el Comité de ética bioética e investigación del HUHMP. the Coping and Adaptation Process Measurement Scale (CAPS). Approved by the Bioethics and Research Ethics Committee of the HUHMP.
Results
68.2% of the parents were women with an age range of 15 to 44 years in 77.2%. The ability to cope and adapt was high and very high when obtaining global scores of 63.6% and 34.4% respectively, in the parents’ ability to generate a behavior in response to a stimulus and a specific coping strategy.
Conclusions
The parents utilized different strategies to take charge of complex situations and to know how to handle them in the best way, using their memory and imagination, resorting to themselves to other people to face and adapt to the environment that surrounds them.
