Abstract

In the world there is an inverse proportion regarding the number of patients waiting for an organ donation and the number of effective donors. It is due to the disinformation and mystification that have been accumulating for many years about organ transplant. Some developing countries have done research efforts and passed laws in order to change those figures, but the results are not significant. This review paper shows the most important facts that have characterized the success of transplants in the world and in our country. It also has some definitions and laws governing the procedure and finally some biotechnological alternatives still in development are mentioned. It is hoped that these alternatives help those people waiting for an organ or tissue donation which will save their lives. This paper is also intended to help in the process of demystification of organ donation so that in the end the reader disseminates this information.
