Choque séptico: Pasos claves en el servicio de urgencias

Resumen

La sepsis es una enfermedad potencialmente mortal y es la principal causa de mortalidad hospitalaria a nivel mundial 1. La
detección temprana de la sepsis es esencial para iniciar oportunamente el tratamiento adecuado2. La sepsis en etapa
temprana, en pacientes con sospecha de infección, a menudo no se diagnostica, lo que provoca un retraso en el tratamiento
y un aumento de la mortalidad 3. El servicio de urgencias es el primer lugar durante la estadía hospitalaria donde se evalúa
sistemáticamente a los pacientes con sospecha de infección y por ende donde se pueden detectar las primeras etapas de
sepsis. Sin embargo, existe un período de tiempo limitado en el servicio de urgencias en el que se deben tomar decisiones
sobre el tratamiento y la disposición del paciente. Identificar a los pacientes en urgencias con alto riesgo de mortalidad es
importante, para iniciar un tratamiento oportuno en aquellas terapias que han demostrado un impacto en la mortalidad de
los pacientes.
