Abstract

Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurological emergency with associated morbidity and mortality. Its rapid diagnostic and
therapeutic approach is key to achieving favorable results. Numerous drugs are available for its management, of which only
some have studies with solid evidence and, therefore, many of the behaviors are still based on expert recommendations and
the availability of the medications and/or procedure. It is necessary to rule out potentially fatal pathological processes based
on a careful history, physical examination and extension studies according to the suspected cause. Here we will review the
approach to the diagnosis and initial treatment of patients presenting to the emergency department with a diagnosis of SE.
