Direct costs of urinary tract infections associated with the use of bladder device in patients at University Hospital Hernando Moncaleano Perdomo during 2013 and the first half of 2014

Introduction. Urinary tract infection associated with bladder device represents a problem for the institutions providing health services because of their high frequency, increased hospital stay, care costs and its ability to prevent them. Objective. Estimate the direct costs of urinary tract infections associated with bladder device (UTI ABV) at the University Hospital of Neiva occurred in 2013 and the first half of 2014. Methodology. Cross-sectional study with analysis of direct costs, where were reviewed the medical records of patients who had UTI ABV for criteria Disease Center (CDC); were analyzed the sociodemographic, clinical characteristics and the costs for diagnosis, treatment, and hospital stay. Results. 18 cases were presented UTI ABV, the average age was 52 years; for every woman, 2 men acquired the infection; 66% occurred in the units of internal medicine and intensive care. The average costs per patient were: laboratories 159.433 COP; interconsultations 82.755 COP; antibiotics 4.704.437 COP; and hospital stay 4.360.233 COP. The total cost per patient was 9.306.859 COP and was estimated 111.682.316 COP cost per year. Conclusion. Direct costs were higher UTI ABV, where the highest value concerns the treatment, followed by stay.
