The word is my kingdom

Paul Ricceur
Abstract

What do I do when I teach? I talk. I have no other way to earn my living, I have no other dignity either; I have no other way to transform the world and I also have no other way to influence men. The word is my work; the word is my kingdom. My students will have, mostly, a different relationship with things and men; they will build something with their hands; or they will talk and write in offices, warehouses, administrations; but his word will not be a word that teaches; it will be a fragment of action, an order, a plan, an outline of action. My word does not initiate any action, does not order any action that may fall directly or indirectly on production; I talk only to communicate to the adolescent generation what the adult generation knows and what it is looking for.
